Do You Need a Permit to Put a Dumpster in Your Driveway in Indianapolis?

This is one of the most common questions we get, and the answer comes down to one distinction: is the dumpster sitting entirely on your private property, or is any part of it in the public right-of-way?

On your own driveway: generally no permit needed

If the container sits entirely on your driveway or other private property, most Indianapolis homeowners don’t need a permit. This covers the large majority of residential rentals we deliver.

On the street or in an alley: usually yes

If there’s no driveway space — common on older Indianapolis streets with tight lots — and the dumpster needs to sit on the street or in a public alley, that’s the public right-of-way, and placement there typically requires a permit through the city’s Department of Business and Neighborhood Services. Rules and fees can change, so confirm current requirements with the city before delivery day if street placement is your only option.

HOA neighborhoods add another layer

Separately from city permitting, many HOA communities around Carmel, Fishers, and Westfield have their own rules about how long a dumpster can sit in a driveway or whether it needs to be behind a fence line.
