A quote that looks $50 cheaper than everyone else’s sometimes ends up being the most expensive dumpster you rent, once the add-on fees show up on the final invoice. Here’s where to look.

Fuel and delivery surcharges

Some companies quote a low base price, then add a separate delivery or fuel surcharge that isn’t mentioned until checkout. Ask directly: “Is delivery and pickup included in that number?” A true flat-rate quote already has it baked in.

Overage weight fees

Every dumpster includes a set tonnage allowance. Go over it and you’re billed per additional ton, sometimes at a steep rate. This is the single most common source of a surprise invoice, especially on jobs with concrete, dirt, or shingles. Ask for the included tonnage in writing before you book — see our weight limits guide for typical allowances by size.

Rental extension fees

Standard rentals run about 7 days. Keep the container longer and most companies charge a daily extension fee. That’s reasonable and expected — the problem is companies that don’t disclose the rate upfront, so you find out only after you’ve already gone over.

Prohibited item surcharges

Certain items — mattresses, tires, appliances with refrigerant — sometimes carry a per-item fee even when a company will technically take them. Ask about specific items before loading them, not after.

How to get a quote with no surprises

Ask for size, included tonnage, rental length, and what a day of extension costs, all before delivery. We quote all four upfront by phone or through the online form — call (317) 537-0940 and get a real number in a couple minutes.
